How does a withdrawal work when my SDIRA holds non-cash assets like real estate or promissory notes?

This is one of the most important things SDIRA holders need to plan for. Unlike a standard brokerage IRA where you can sell stock and distribute cash the same day, an SDIRA holding real estate, promissory notes, or private placements requires a current Fair Market Value (FMV) appraisal before any distribution can be processed. From there you have two options: sell the asset and distribute cash, or take an in-kind distribution by transferring the asset out of the IRA into your personal name. Note that the FMV at time of transfer is treated as the distribution amount for tax purposes. Don't wait until you urgently need the funds to figure this out.
