One of the unique features of a self-directed IRA is the ability to hold certain alternative assets that may not be available through traditional IRA providers. For one Mountain West IRA client, that meant something very familiar: cattle.
Our fictionalized account owner, Ira N. Vestor, had spent much of his life around farming and understood the livestock business. He chose to use his self-directed IRA to purchase Black Angus cattle and selected an unrelated third-party rancher to care for and manage them.
At Ira’s direction, Mountain West IRA processed the purchase using funds from his self-directed IRA. The cattle became assets of the IRA, while the third-party rancher handled their care and management.
As the cattle were bred and the offspring later sold at auction, proceeds from the sales were returned directly to the self-directed IRA. Expenses associated with the IRA-owned livestock were also paid from the IRA.
It’s an unusual example, but a great illustration of just how broad the world of allowable alternative assets can be in a self-directed IRA.
Mountain West IRA provides administrative and recordkeeping services and processes transactions at the direction of the account owner. Account owners are responsible for selecting their assets and service providers and conducting their own due diligence.
